To Whom It May Concern:

I would like to tell you about a girl I once knew. She was the most beautiful girl you would ever see: silky hair, a constant smile and eyes that could light up a room. I once knew her. She gave generously, received gracefully and would help anyone whom she could. I once knew her. She loved to tell jokes, go to the movies but most of all she loved being with her friends. I once knew her. She had such a positive outlook on life, the world was hers and she knew it. I once knew her.

But now she finds a world that promotes intolerance and ignorance of other cultures and beliefs. She now finds a world where to stop abortions we kill doctors, to stop discrimination we discriminate and to stop the pain of the terminally ill we face prosecution. She now finds a world where some refuse to believe in the existence of God, yet others believe blindly. She now finds a world where fundamentalists value killers and rapists over homosexuals and interracial couples; preach equality yet practice persecution. She lives in a world where masturbation is a sin, yet the Crusades are glorified. She now finds a world of sweatshop corporations, dishonest politicians and door-to-door religion.

She now finds a world where life is priceless, yet she is worth minimum wage. She now finds a world where one percent controls ninety-nine percent, yet that ninety-nine percent continues to allow injustice and cruelty. She lives in a world where doors are opening and horizons expanding, but only for a privileged few. She lives in a world with multimillionaires, yet some can't put food on the table. She lives in a world with school shootings, cults on every playground and extracurricular activities that include teachers having sex with their elementary students. She now lives in a world where communication is cold and abrupt, tempers are short and technology has far exceeded its useful limits.

She now finds a world where people die for standing up for their rights, people die for asking questions and people die for saying what they have on their mind. And she now finds a world where she has sold her future to pay for her future, the "life is fair" nonsense gathers dust in an unknown location and she is slowly getting covered by the sands of the hourglass.

I once knew this beautiful girl, and she once knew me too. But as we grew old before our time, we began to realize that forever does not exist, peace does not exist, and love does not exist. And with tearstained eyes we realized that this is the world we live in - but not our world. I no longer know this girl, but I do know that somehow or another we will find each other again and make this our world.

Yours truly,

Me
